Size
TL 20-25in (51.3-65.9cm);
T 5 1/4-9 1/4in (13.5-24cm);
WT 15 3/4-55 1/4oz (448g-1.57kg).

Identification A large weasel-like carnivore varying from dark glossy brown to yellowish above, paler below, with a buff or orange throat patch. Most likely to be confused with Fisher which is larger and lacks throat patch, or mink which is smaller, darker, with shorter tail.
Range Occurs widely across Canada to Alaska and south through Rockies to N California in West and to New York and New England in East.
Habitat Almost exclusively forests, particularly conifers.
Food Small mammals, birds, insects, and fruit.
Breeding Young born in spring; 1-5 (usually 2-4) young, born bind, naked, and helpless in a nest built in a tree.
Conservation After declining in many areas, particularly in E USA and Canada, now increasing; reintroduction programs in many places.
Similar Species Most likely to be confused with Fisher.
