kawaiixteddy, posting in fursuit @ 10:08 pm: Static Jaws..?

Well hello again XD

So when I started making fursuits, I sort of started backwards. I started with the harder things first, such as a moving jaw, so I can't figure out how to make a static jaw >.< I have theories, but I just can't picture it! With moving jaws, I make a hrm... ah! I can show you the way I make head bases.

http://community.livejournal.com/fursuit/1334914.html

I make them like the first part, with the balaclava and the foam around the head.

I can figure out what the jaw would look like. If you see on those head bases, I make a part of foam that goes under the chin, with elastic on that.  With a static jaw, would there not be  a part that goes under the chin?

Sorry I hope you can understand what I'm asking, I'm having trouble explaining it haha

Could you spend the rest of your life with someone who had horrific taste in music? How important is it to you to share your love of music with a good friend or romantic partner?

I've tried living with a partner that didn't like my music. It's not fun having to constantly not play your favorite music because you know it will just get ripped on. And, inevitably, this wears on the relationship, as well as your mental health.

On the other side of things, I couldn't live with someone who constantly listened to mind-numbing metal, obnoxious gansta rap, or depressing country. Sooner or later I'd have to take a shotgun to the stereo.

Musical compatibility, as well as compatibility with other forms of entertainment, is essential to a successful relationship. What's the point if every time you and your mate go out you get in separate cars and go to different events?

I can has a volunteer. She's probably older than me, she used to drive her own truck all over Florida (California doesn't pay as well) and her hook, the thing that got her foot in the door into this place of Severe Restrictions on Volunteerism, is that her only son died in a car crash last November and she was looking to break the depression.

Did you know that in Quebec there were 500 deaths-by-automobile last year and 100 deaths from H1N1 'swine flu'? We all need to get vaccinated against the desire to drive everywhere.

So, the volunteer -- I'm doing my best to wear her out. 8^D

My bosses are all worried that she'll slow me down as she follows me all day, but she's an eager enough shoveler and sweeper so it all evens out. She loves all the critters in my area although she can't remember what they're called from one minute to the next. Not personal names, _what_ they are, like: meerkat, lemur catta, fishing cat... What was that animal called again? Some kind of cat? So, after 15 years as a trucker her career shift is to geriatric care. She looked at animal care but that's a three-year certification and the salaries are like $10/hr. Geriatric care, only one year and better pay afterward.

I was to have her Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday I got to wear her out almost all day (7am to 5pm). Saturday at noon she remembered a dinner appointment with her brother and took off. Sunday I was wallowing in snow and she didn't show. 8^D

It's still snowing, with the added bonus of either freezing drizzle or fog coating everything with an icy glaze. At least in the morning I can plug in the space-heater I keep on the passenger-seat and melt the stuff off. And go to work in a toasty car. That doesn't stop freezing rain from sticking on the ten minute drive to work. Sunday I had to stop twice to scrape the windshield clear.

I saw that NWS has called a winter storm warning. Expect up to an inch of ice and sleet and freezing rain and snow, staring around midnight or, so tonight. The Governer has called a state of emergency. On the way home, public radio was giving out hypothermia tips. Some government agency or other was doing a press conference on the news tonight.

We're supposed to call in and find out if the office is open tomorrow.

tekroo @ 06:53 pm: Does This Work?
I mean... Status Report!

Crossed Ohio with Jack and the Ferret, picked up the tank (took four people to pick it up -- the fork lift couldn't cross the driveway in the snow), hopped on over to the Hoppin' Frog Brewery to pick some beer and chat with the head brewer, replaced a turn indicator bulb in the Ferret Mobile, picked up supplies at WalMart then back to the Motel for beer!

The return trip is a little up in the air due to weather. I'll do some research in the morning.

msmanuscript, posting in fursuit @ 05:48 pm: Fixing the head.
I have a Styrofoam head shape, I found it at school a few months ago. It's handy, however, there's one problem. It's extra small. My head is small. So, it's TOO small. The beak form is too small for my face (it's okay, the clay isn't going on my face, so it'll work out in the end anyway) and it makes the hats that I put on it very wavy and lumpy because it doesn't fit right.

Any ideas on how to make the head the right size? I was thinking duct-tape, but that gets sticky with time and the last thing I want is to send someone a head or a hat that has stick on the inside! Ideas?

kiranlightpaw @ 07:24 pm: Avatar, Interstellar Travel, and Ethics
I told you I would be a lying sack of shit if I said I wasn't going to write about Avatar again. This entry, however, is only tangentially related.

Long before that movie, I was a big fan of the idea of interstellar travel - the idea of travel between the stars. Not so much in the Star Trek sense of warp speed leaps in hours between stars, but in a realistic, scientifically accurate understanding of what it would take to get to another star. It's something I've been following since about the age of ... probably thirteen or so, and has waxed and waned over the course of my life from and idle curiosity to a near obsession at some points.

Now, I'm not an expert by any means. I only consider myself to be a well-read amateur on the subject.

For those of you have reading for awhile, my first piece of published fiction (and, unfortunately, so far the only, but more on that at a later date) was a story called Beneath the Sea of Stars, that ran in the conbooks for Furry Weekend Atlanta 2004 and Rocket City Furmeet 2006. It was set aboard a sub-light starship. While mostly a little slice-of-life romantic story, I added in a few touches of reasonably accurate science (a sub-light starship featuring rotating compartments and a weightless center section, a reasonably close star system, gravity boosting, etc).

When the first trailer for Avatar came out about six months or so ago, the first thing I noticed that made me say "holy shitballs, I have to see this movie," was this shot of the spacecraft seen at the very beginning of the movie. My thought process at the time was: holy carp, a movie about space travel with a reasonably accurate picture of what an interstellar spacecraft would probably look like based on our current understanding. Umpossible! So I was reading a little bit about the ship today over at Pandorapedia. Once again, I was blown away by how much work Cameron and his team put into getting everything right in their universe, including the science on interstellar travel. Just read the article about a spacecraft that was featured on the screen for about 30 seconds.

Anyways. Enough fanboi. Back to interstellar travel.

In reading the article, a lot of the science and engineering work on it is pretty clearly visible. Acceleration, relativistic time dilation, methods of propulsion are accounted for in the article and all, really, are nothing that hasn't been talked about in most of the books and papers I've read on the subject. It keeps within the realm of current thought. So I kept reading.

Further down in the article where crew is discussed, I came across this:
Unfortunately, the cost of shipping back personnel precludes returning individuals still under contract who have medical problems that cannot be treated on Pandora, so they are euthanized there.
Ouch.

But then I paused. And at one moment, I realized that, in all my thinking about this subject from an engineering and scientific standpoint, I realized I had never considered the ethical, moral, and humanistic aspects of the subject. Even now, considering that this type of research is confined to the bleeding edge of space travel science (and these guys are thinking about it in their spare time), it wouldn't surprise me to know that, probably, not many ethicists, or psychologists, have been brought in to consult on the subject of interstellar travel.

In many ways, people on manned expeditions to another star would be more alone than any human in history. I mean, hell, even the journey of the Mayflower was about 10 weeks from England to the New World. Under the absolute best of conditions, we're talking years before a person on an interstellar expedition would see home again ... if ever.

So here you are, on a remote planet orbiting a star 11.9 light years from Earth. Even at .5c, it's about 22 years home. You are a pioneer, on the frontier just like the pioneers in wagons of old. There may be only a couple dozen people on the expedition. In a situation like that, if you are injured or become ill beyond whatever field medicine would be available, would euthanasia be acceptable?

It sure would make a fascinating paper.

servalsatyr, posting in fursuit @ 05:36 pm: Fox and lamb head progress
Just thought I would show everyone what I've been working on as of late. The fox head is unfinished at this point. I'm waiting on the commissioner's feedback before I smooth it out and clean it up. The lamb head I am considering done. If you feel like giving critiques feel free! But I may not be able to change anything depending on that the commissioners say.

maxgoof @ 03:33 pm: Big1T1en and Bowls
Six of the eleven Big Ten teams went bowling this year. The results were three wins and three losses.

The big three out of the Big Ten, Ohio State, Iowa, and Penn State, all won. The losers were Northwestern, Michigan State, and Minnesota.

Of the three losers, only Northwestern is a bit of a surprise, since they virtually had the game handed to them on a silver platter. Michigan State shot itself in the foot with 16 players suspended or booted from the team. Minnesota, who only became bowl eligible due to non-conference play, lost by only a point or two.

The results speak well of the conference in general, and should go a long way towards silencing critics of the power over speed style of the Big Ten.

shatterstripes @ 01:14 pm: i keep windows out of my personal life for a reason
I am thoroughly confused as to the behavior of Windows when applying custom icons to this single-file version of this furshlugginer kiosk I'm involved in at work. Sometimes it shows up if I move the executable around, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it shows up if I move it to another machine, sometimes it doesn't.

And for some reason if I just drag it out of Parallels, where it was generated, onto the Mac, 3/5 of it is left behind and it doesn't work. But dumping it onto an USB key from Parallels then onto the Mac, then dragging that back into my virtual Windows box? Survived intact. *pounds head repeatedly into desk until blood flows*

Sweet Kali how I hate dealing with Windows. My stress level over the past few work days has been through the roof and most of that has been due to trying to wrangle fucking Windows. I don't care if it's awesome for you, for me it's like hot needles in my pain centers, with current applied at random. All these little... hitches.
